THE PHILADELPHIA RIGHT to EDUCATION TASK
FORCEThe Right to Education Consent Decree of 1972 provided for theestablishment of a Local Task Force in each of the 29 Intermediate Unitsin Pennsylvania. The Local Task Forces were created to insure that the intentand spirit of the Right to Education Consent Decree is carried out throughoutthe commonwealth of PennsylvaniaWe are a group of parents and professionals working together to benefitchildrenand young adults with disabilities. We have assumed the following responsibilitiesas our work to insure each student's rights to a free, appropriate education:We review special education legislation and other legislation affecting school aged children.We assist in monitoring and observing special education classes and Provide recommendations for improvement and expansion.We discuss
education concerns and provide recommendations to resolve
problems.
We serve in an advisory and advocacy role to protect the rights
of students with disabilities.
We encourage cooperation with public and private agencies and officials thatprovide services to persons with disabilities.
The Right to Education Task Force generally meets on the third Thursday ofevery month at 10:00 a.m. The meetings are usually held at the Arc of Philadelphia,2350 West Westmoreland Street in the lower level.
Our Task Force meetings are open to all parents of students with special needs,and other concerned individuals. All interested parties are invited to comeand consider active involvement in uniting for the rights of our children.
