Happy New Year!
Another year has come and gone, and with it
changes, updates and exciting happenings!
Our first meeting of the year is next Thursday,
January 18th at the ARC with a chew and chat
from 9:30-10Am and meeting from 10-12pm.
Our focus will be on budgets, how to understand
funds at your child's school, how finance affect
education and services. John Owens from the
School District and Michael Churchill from the
Public Interest Law Center of Philadelphia will
be joining us.
We will also give updates on Task Force
activities: our advocacy movements have really
taken off, and we're happy to announce that our
efforts with school district budget cuts had an impact!
And, you'll want to keep your eye out for our
annual Awards for a teacher of cognitive
disabilities and for Autistic support, and mark your
calendars for 2/15 when attorneys Michael Basch
and Kim Caputo will be returning for Dispute
Resolution.
Hope to see you all there!

'No Child Left Behind'
The Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), renamed the "No Child Left Behind" (NCLB) Act of 2001, established laudable goals -- high standards and accountability for the learning of all children, regardless of their background or ability.
However, the law must be fundamentally improved and federal lawmakers need to provide adequate funding if NCLB is to achieve its goal. Congress has to reauthorize the legislation in 2007, offering an opportunity to make it more workable and more responsive to the real needs of children.
NEA is in the forefront of the effort to improve the federal education law. We have developed a comprehensive "Positive Agenda for the ESEA Reauthorization" that spells out detailed recommendations to make the law better.(Read more.)
